Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers (6-1-0) are set to face the Edmonton Aviators (0-2-4) Thursday night and the Vancouver Whitecaps (4-2-1) on Saturday evening after emerging from their Southern swing against Charleston and Atlanta with three points and a split.

TIMBERS VS. EDMONTON - THURSDAY, 7 p.m.

The Aviators come to the Rose City in search of their first win Thursday, featuring a defense that has allowed only five goals all season behind the play of Argentine goalkeeper Jose Luis Campi. Edmonton has had considerable trouble finding the net this season, logging just two goals through six games, fewest in the league. Portland, on the other hand, paces the circuit with 16 goals on the year. Thursday's match is the first meeting between the two clubs.

TIMBERS VS. VANCOUVER - SATURDAY, 7 p.m.

The Timbers defeated the Whitecaps 3-1 in Vancouver on May 23 for their first-ever win at Swangard Stadium. Alan Gordon scored twice and Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar added another goal in the come-from-behind win. The second of four matches between the teams, both the Timbers and Whitecaps are challenging for the top spot in the Western Conference and for bragging rights in the quest for the Cascadia Cup. Energy will be a key for Vancouver, as they are playing Montreal the night prior.

BARK IN THE PARK

The Timbers will be holding their annual tribute to four-legged friends, hosting "Bark in the Park" at Thursday's match against Edmonton. "Bark in the Park" is a popular promotion offering free admission for every human attending the game with each paying canine.

FOOTBAG GIVEAWAY

The first 1,000 fans in attendance at Saturday's game against Vancouver will receive a complementary retro foot bag.

CASCADIA CUP

Saturday's contest marks the fourth of eight matches against Northwest rivals Seattle and Vancouver in the quest for the 2004 Cascadia Cup. The Timbers are 3-0 with 9 points in the competition for the Cup, which is awarded to the team with the highest head-to-head point total at the end of the season.

FLASH GORDON

Forward Alan Gordon scored three goals on the Timbers' Southern road trip, bumping his total to nine on the year with 19 points collected, making him the A-League leader in both categories.

BANGS AND BRUISES

Forward Byron Alvarez is nursing an irritated hip flexor, but is likely to play this weekend ... midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar has been bothered by strained quadriceps, but is also likely to play ... defender Shawn Saunders will be held out of action with a right hamstring injury suffered at Charleston ... midfielder Memo Arzate will not play with a sprained right knee.

ON THE AIR

Both matches will be aired live on KZNY AM-1010 at 7 p.m. with Andy McNamara calling the play-by-play. Arnulfo Alvarez will call the games in Spanish on KRMZ AM-1150. The Timbers can also be heard live on the Internet at OregonLive.com.
