
Battery ready for City Stars

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Cleveland City Stars this Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in a first ever meeting between the teams; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, (843) 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com). Cleveland won the USL Second Division in 2008 and were promoted to USL1 for the 2009 season.
The Battery (4-0-4) enters the weekend in second position in the USL1 tables and remains the only unbeaten side in the league. Charleston defeated the Rochester Rhinos 2-0 at Blackbaud Stadium last Saturday night. Forward Randi Patterson and defender Frankie Sanfilippo scored the goals as the Battery avenged its 2008 playoff defeat.
Charleston goalkeeper Dusty Hudock made one save as he recorded his league-leading sixth shut-out of the season.
Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser will not have midfielder Tyler Hemming available for selection Saturday night. Hemming has been called up to the Canada national team for their game versus Cyprus also being played this Saturday.
Cleveland (1-4-1, 4 points) enters the weekend in tenth position in the USL First Division. The City Stars were defeated 3-0 in their last match played last Friday night versus the Carolina RailHawks in Cleveland. Cleveland plays in Carolina on Friday night before coming down to Charleston for the match on Saturday evening.
Cleveland's lone win was a 1-0 result versus the Minnesota Thunder in a game played in Cleveland on May 16.
The City Stars are led by first-year head coach Rod Underwood. Underwood previously served as an assistant coach with the Portland Timbers. Underwood was hired to replace Martin Rennie, who guided the franchise in its first two seasons. Rennie departed for the USL First Division Carolina Rail Hawks before the City Stars were promoted.

Spicer and Sanfilippo Honored
Darren Spicer and Frankie Sanfilippo have both been named to the USL First Division team of the week following outstanding performances in last weekend's win against the Rhinos. Spicer recorded an assist on the first goal and Sanfilippo scored the second en route to the Battery victory.
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
The Charleston Battery will begin its 2009 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup campaign with a home fixture on Tuesday, June 9 versus Atlanta FC (USASA); gates open at Blackbaud Stadium at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM ($5 - $10, (843) 971-GOAL (4625) / www.charlestonbattery.com).
Atlanta FC qualified for this year's tournament by finishing second in the Region III USASA championship; Atlanta FC is the first USASA team from Georgia to qualify for the Open Cup in the professional era.
The Battery enjoyed a tremendous run in the Open Cup in 2008 advancing to the championship game, but losing 2-1 to Major League Soccer's DC United.
