Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery will replace Head Coach Chris Ramsey with his assistant of three years, Mike Anhaeuser for the 2005 A-League campaign. Ramsey steps down by mutual agreement with the Battery in order that he can spend more time with his family in the UK. Anhaeuser will assume all coaching responsibilities, effective immediately, as the Battery begins rebuilding after a disappointing season that saw Charleston miss the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
Charleston Battery President Nigel Cooper,
"On behalf of the Charleston Battery I'd like to thank Chris for three years of excellent service, I know it has been difficult for him living apart from his family. Chris Ramsey brought the City of Charleston its first A-League Championship (2003) and has been pivotal both on and off the field in positioning the Club."
Ramsey joined the Charleston Battery prior to the 2002 season. He compiled an overall regular season record of 41 wins, 27 losses and 16 ties. Ramsey secured Charleston its first ever A-League Championship in 2003 and led the Battery to the semifinal of the US Open Cup in 2004.
Chris Ramsey,
"Obviously I am sad to be leaving the Club but I've had a great time here and I'd like to thank the Charleston Battery owners for giving me this opportunity. I'd also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my time in Charleston and I wish the Battery every success in the future."
Mike Anhaeuser joined the Charleston Battery as a player in 1994 after graduating from Indiana University where he won a NCAA Championship in 1988 and earned Big Ten and Team MVP honors. Anhaeuser played seven seasons as a midfielder for the Battery and still ranks 4th all-time in games played (115) and 2nd all-time in assists (17). As a player, Anhaeuser was a member of the Charleston Battery side that won the 1996, USISL Pro League National Championship.
Nigel Cooper,
"I'm very excited that Mike Anhaeuser will be the new Head Coach at the Battery. He has been a part of the Club since 1994, was a superb player and has developed into a good young coach. He knows the game inside out and I'm sure will do a terrific job of leading the Battery forward."
Anhaeuser switched to a coaching role in 1999 after tearing his ACL during pre-season. The Fort Wayne, IN native was Alan Dicks' assistant-coach from 1999-2001 and then Chris Ramsey's from 2002 to the present. Anhaeuser was a key member of the Battery coaching staff that won the A-League Championship in 2003. Mike Anhaeuser lives in Mount Pleasant, SC with his wife Kim and their two-year old daughter Lauren.
The Charleston Battery's 2004 season ended Monday night with a 3-1 win over the Toronto Lynx. Despite winning its last four A-League games Charleston finished in eighth position in the Eastern Conference and did not advance to post-season play; the top four teams from each Conference make the playoffs.
