Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery lost to the Portland Timbers tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of two goals to one in front of a crowd of 4,370. The Timbers were awarded a disputed penalty in stoppage time that Portland forward Alex Bengard drilled past Charleston goalkeeper Dusty Hudock to win the game.

With the loss, Charleston drops to 2-4-3, 9 points, 6th in the Eastern Conference. Portland remains unbeaten with a record of 6-0, 18 points, 1st in the Western Conference.

Portland opened the scoring in 29th minute. Midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar slipped the ball through the middle to an onrushing Alan Gordon. Gordon carried the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box and slotted it into the right-hand corner of the goal.

Charleston equalized in the 42nd minute. Forward Greg Simmonds swept the ball across from the right side. Striker Paul Conway met the cross at the near post and directed a neat header past Portland goalkeeper Josh Saunders into the goal.

Charleston came close to winning the game in the 90th minute. Defender Jason Kutney drove the ball from the right-hand side to the back of the box. Substitute forward Wolde Harris rose to head but his effort missed high.

Moments later, a foul was called in the penalty box for a seemingly innocuous challenge by defender Mark Watson. The referee pointed to the spot and forward Alex Bengard converted to give Portland the victory.
