Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to Vancouver, Canada Thursday for a match versus the Vancouver Whitecaps; kick off is set for 10:00 PM (CNN 1450AM / www.charlestonbattery.com). The game is the first of three on the west coast for the Battery; Charleston plays Seattle on Friday night (10 PM) then concludes the trip with a game against the Portland Timbers on Sunday (9 PM).

The Battery has had a two week break since its last game on August 16, a 1-0 road win versus the first place Montreal Impact. Omar Daley scored the lone goal in stoppage-time at the end of the game.

Charleston (11-8-5, 38 points) enters the match in fourth position in the USL First Division one point and one place behind Vancouver (10-6-9, 39 points). The top six finishers advance to the USL First Division play-offs. A win on Thursday would elevate Charleston to second position in the standings.

The Battery and the Whitecaps met earlier this season at Blackbaud Stadium on June 18; Charleston won the game 1-0 on a Gavin Glinton goal. Charleston's squad includes two former Vancouver players, Mark Watson and Ian Fuller. Both players played for the Whitecaps in 2005.

The Whitecaps are led by two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year Bob Lilley. Lilley led Vancouver to a playoff appearance in 2005 but Vancouver fell in the first stage on penalties to eventual finalist Richmond. Lilley previously coached the Montreal Impact and the Hershey Wildcats.

The Vancouver squad includes former Battery midfielder Steve Klein; Klein was a member of the 2003 Charleston Battery championship winning team.

Following this three game road trip the Battery returns to Blackbaud Stadium for its final regular season fixture on Sunday August 10 versus the Rochester Rhinos; kick off is set for 6 PM ($8 - $15 - 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com).
