Get Ready For The Charleston Battery This Weekend

August 29, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Seattle Sounders News Release

After winning three in a row, the Seattle Sounders have moved into the sixth and final playoff spot in the USL First Division. They'll put their payoff lives on the line when they host the fourth place Charleston Battery on Friday, September 1st at Qwest field. Kickoff is 7pm.

Here is what you can expect when these two sides take the field on Friday:

The Sounders are 8-2-2 at home in 2006 and are on a three game winning streak in part to great defensive play by Danny Jackson, Kevin Sakuda, Jake Besagno, Noah Merl and Chris Eylander in the net. The Sounder defense has allowed just one goal over their three game streak.

The Sounders, who have the league's second highest scoring offense battle the league's third best defense in the Charleston Battery. The Sounders have scored 37 combined goals while the Battery have allowed only 23 goals in 24 matches.

With two shutouts in each of their last two matches, the Sounders have played 243 consecutive minutes of shutout soccer. Their longest streak this season was 251 minutes in late May through early June.

The Sounders (34pts) are chasing Miami FC (35pts) just one point ahead of them for 5th place. Nipping on the heels of the Sounders are Atlanta, Puerto Rico and Virginia Beach - all fighting for the final playoff spot!

The Battery are in fourth place, just one point behind the Vancouver Whitecaps in third. The Battery finish the regular season with three of four on the road with a trip through the Northwest against the Whitecaps, Sounders and Portland Timbers.

The Sounders and Battery meet for just the fifth time in team history. With a 2-2-0 record against Charleston, the Sounders have never lost to the Battery at home.

Former Univ. of Washington standout and Sounder, now Battery Goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock returns to Seattle with the third best goals against average in the league at .823.

Sounder Forward Cam Weaver continues to lead the league in goals scored with 18. But after a four-goal weekend Miami FC's Romario is now a close second with 17. Weaver is due for a goal; he hasn't scored since his hat trick against Virginia Beach on August 11th.
