May 13, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to Saputo Stadium, Montreal, Friday night for a 7:45 PM game versus the Montreal Impact (Sports Radio 1450 AM / USLLive.com). Montreal are the current Canadian champions, they represented Canada in the 2008 / 2009 CONCACAF Champions League but were eliminated in the quarter-finals. The Battery (2-0-3, 9 points) enters the game unbeaten on the season in 4th position in the USL First Division.

Charleston defeated the Carolina RailHawks by a score of two goals to one in its last match, played Saturday night in Cary, NC. Forward Dan Antoniuk recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Battery past his former team. Defender Frankie Sanfilippo, another former RailHawks player, scored the second Battery goal.

Defender John Wilson received a red-card in the second-half versus Carolina and will miss the game versus Montreal as he serves a one-match suspension.

The Montreal Impact has made a slow start to the season with just one point from their four games played. Most recently the Impact lost 2-1 to the Rochester Rhinos in a game played last Saturday afternoon in Montreal.

This will be the second game of the year for the Battery and the Impact. The teams played to a 0-0 tie on April 18 at Blackbaud Stadium.

In 2008 Charleston defeated Montreal twice at Blackbaud Stadium and lost the lone game played at Saputo Stadium.

Montreal enjoyed a banner year in '08 winning the inaugural Nutrilite Championship and advancing to the CONCACAF Champions League as Canada's sole representative. The Nutrilite Championship determines the Canadian champion and features the Impact, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Major League Soccer's Toronto FC.

Montreal is led by second year head coach and former Charleston Battery defender John Limniatis who took over midway through the 2008 season. Limniatis played one year with the Battery (1999); he is a former Canadian international (44 caps).

Montreal last won the USL1 title in 2004 but has featured in the semifinal stage of the post-season in three out of the last four seasons.
