Midfielder scores first goal in team history over weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. - United Soccer Leagues announced today that Portland Timbers U-23s midfielder Jarad vanSchaik was selected to the Premier Development League Team of the Week for the fifth week of the USL season.

Leading the Timbers U-23s to a 2-2 draw in their first game in team history, vanSchaik logged a goal and an assist against the Victoria Highlanders on May 9. His goal in the 34th minute was the first goal scored in Timbers U-23s team history.

A native of Tualatin, Ore., vanSchaik, 20, finished his sophomore season at the University of Portland in 2008. Last season, he played in 17 matches (14 starts) for the Pilots and recorded two assists.

The Timbers U-23s play host to the Spokane Spiders on Friday and Yakima Reds on Saturday in back-to-back matches at PGE Park.
