Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Rochester Rhinos Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium (Gates 6:30 - kick off 7:30, $8 - $15 - 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com). The game is Charleston's fourth of the year; the Battery is still looking for its first win of the 2008 USL First Division season. This is Rochester's first game of the year; the Rhinos begin the season with five games on the road before returning to Rochester for their first home game on May 17.
Charleston lost 1-0 last Saturday night to the Carolina RailHawks in Cary, NC. The Battery finished the game with just ten men after defender John Wilson was red-carded in the second half. The Battery opened its season with a 2-2 tie in Miami and then battled the defending champions the Seattle Sounders to a 1-1 tie, April 19.
John Wilson will not be available for selection Friday as he serves a one-game suspension for the red-card versus the RailHawks. Midfielder Stephen Armstrong rejoined the Club this week and could feature against Rochester.
Forward Ian Fuller and midfielder Chris Corcoran both resumed training this week after struggling with injuries picked up during pre-season. Both players could be available for selection Friday night.
In 2007 the Battery tied the Rhinos 1-1 in the game played at Blackbaud Stadium. Charleston lost 5-2 in the return match played at PaeTek Park in Rochester.
The Rhinos lost in the first round of the playoffs last year after making it to the championship game in 2006. Rochester has won the USL first Division Championship on three occasions (1998, 2000 & 2001) and is also the only non MLS side to win the US Open Cup (1999) since the inception of Major league Soccer.
The Rhinos appointed former player Darren Tilley as head coach during the off-season. Tilley played for Rochester from 1998 - 2000 and was a member of the 1998 championship winning team and the 1999 US Open Cup winning team.
Tickets for the Friday night match are available for $8 - $15; to purchase tickets or for more information please call (843) 971-GOAL (4625) or visit www.charlestonbattery.com.
