Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery defeated the Rochester Raging Rhinos by a score of five goals to one tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 2,928. Rochester scored first but the Battery came roaring back with five unanswered goals, four in the second-half, to earn its first home win since May 11. The Battery improves to 4-15-6, 18 points but remains in last position in the Eastern Conference. Rochester drops to 13-9-3, 42 points, good for third position in the Conference.

The Rhinos drew first-blood in the 4th minute of the game. Rochester worked a short corner to midfielder Kirk Wilson twenty-yards out. Wilson took a neat touch then lashed a left-footed drive past Battery goalkeeper, Chris Doyle and into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

The tieing goal was scored on a defensive bungle by former Battery defender John Wilson. Wilson ran into the ball as it was headed across the six-yard box and inadvertently headed past his own goalkeeper, Soren Johnson into the goal.

After the break the Battery turned up the pressure and were rewarded with the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute. Midfielder Kevin Jackson slotted the ball through to forward Greg Simmonds. Simmonds outpaced defender David Wright and tucked the ball past Johnson from just inside the box.

Kirk Wilson forced a pair of saves from Doyle just before the hour-mark. In the 51st minute Doyle smothered an effort at the near-post, then in the 59th minute he made a good save, falling to his left.

The Battery scored its third in the 69th minute as Ted Chronopoulos' miss-hit shot dropped at the feet of substitute forward Paul Conway. Conway rounded Johnson and tapped home from three yards out.

Forward Jesus Martinez scored the fifth goal and his first in a Battery uniform in the 70th minute. The rookie striker reacted first to the ball as it came back off the cross-bar and headed into an empty net from inside the six-yard box.

The final goal was scored by midfielder Kevin Jackson in the last minute of the game. Substitute forward Caleb Norkus touched the ball back to Jackson just outside the box. Jackson hit hard, low drive that beat Johnson, diving to his left.
