(Milwaukee, WI) Carlo Corazzin converted on a controversial penalty kick awarded to Vancouver in the waning moments of second half stoppage time to lift the Whitecaps to a 2-2 tie with Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team Thursday night (8/12) at Uihlein Soccer Park. A season-high crowd of 2,424 looked on in stunned disbelief as Corazzin scored on the dubious penalty kick awarded to the Whitecaps by referee Mark Gorak following a foul called against Wave United defender Joe Hammes, who was defending Corrazin at the top of the penalty area. The goal also negated an apparent game-winning effort by the short-handed Wave United squad, which had a played a man down since the 52nd minute after a red-card ejection of defender Troy Dusosky.

The Whitecaps struck first on a goal by Jason Jordan in the 11th minute following a turnover by Milwaukee in its defensive end. Martin Nash intercepted a pass just outside the penalty area and quickly touched the ball over to Winston Griffiths on the right side of the box. Griffiths then sent a pass to Jordan at the far post for an easy tap-in past Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin. Milwaukee evened the score in first half stoppage time when Johnny Torres scored on a penalty kick following a hand-ball in the box by Vancouver.

Both teams had multiple opportunities to score following Dusosky's early second-half ejection, but it was Torres who finally tallied in the 85th minute. He took a pass from Joe Hammes to right of the goal and then, after spinning completely around on the dribble, fired a low shot past Vancouver ‘keeper Alex Marques from 10 yards out to give Milwaukee a 2-1 advantage. Torres' second goal looked like it would stand up to be the game-winner until Corazzin's penalty kick evened the score just five minutes later.

Both teams had opportunities to win in overtime, the best chance belonging to Milwaukee's Greg Howes, who dribbled past two defenders in the box only to have his one v. one challenge against Marques turned away by the Vancouver netminder in the 116th minute.

Wave United moved its record to 8-10-4 (28) points, while the Whitecaps are now 12-7-5 (41 points). Vancouver also leads the season series 2-0-1, with the final meeting between the clubs set for August 27 Vancouver's Swangard Stadium. Milwaukee goes on the road for its next two (Sunday, August 15, 7:05 PM CDT at Edmonton, and Tuesday, August 17, 8:05 PM CDT at Calgary) before returning for its final regular season home game against Edmonton on Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein.
