Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-0 Thursday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,006. Stephen Armstrong scored in the first half and substitute forward Teba McKnight scored his first goal for the Battery in the second period to put the game beyond doubt. With the win Charleston improves to 3-2-2, 11, points and climbs to 6th position in the USL First Division.

The game started slowly and the first real shot of the game resulted in a goal in the 17th minute. Defender Shane Crawford drove a long pass forward to Stephen Armstrong at the edge of the box. Armstrong flicked a header on past the defender, controlled the ball with his right foot then struck a dipping volley over Seattle goalkeeper David Mahoney and into the goal.

The Sounders fought back and out-shot Charleston 6-1 in the first half; Andre Gregor came closest to equalizing in the 36th minute but his hard right-footed shot missed wide-right.

Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock was forced into action in the 57th minute stopping a CJ Klass volley with a good save. Three minutes later forward Jamal Sutton lashed a shot at the goal that Hudock just managed to turn around the post.

In the 69th minute the Battery was awarded a direct free-kick on the right side of the penalty-area. Shane Crawford curled a low shot around the wall but Mahoney dove to his right and pushed the ball out for a corner.

Ten minutes later Crawford spotted a gap down the middle and played a long pass over the top for Teba McKnight. McKnight out-paced his defender and slotted past Mahoney for the Battery's second goal.

Charleston travels to Puerto Rico this weekend for a two-game series. The Battery plays the Islanders at 8 PM Saturday and again at 5PM on Sunday (CNN 1450 AM / www.charlestonbattery.com).
