
Battery Deadlocked By Islanders

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery tied the Puerto Rico Islanders tonight 0-0 at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,694. With the draw, the Battery improves to 2-6-4, 10 points, and remains in 7th place in the Eastern Conference. Puerto Rico improves to 1-10-4, 7 points, last place in the conference.
Charleston had an early chance in the 3rd minute. Midfielder Kevin Jackson chipped a long ball to forward Greg Simmonds in the center. Simmonds cut past goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey then fired a shot wide of the target.
Puerto Rico's first chance did not come until the 17th minute. Midfielder Ricardo Alcerro collected the ball inside the 18-yard-box. He took a touch then drilled a left-footed shot wide of the goal.
After the break, Puerto Rico almost scored in the 65th minute. Former Battery striker Raul Diaz Arce found an unmarked Mauricio Salles inside the box. Salles' first touch let him down and the ensuing shot crashed into the side netting.
Charleston continued to push forward and came close in the 69th minute. Substitute midfielder Aleksey Korol made a strong run down the right side. He crossed the ball to the middle but Gabe Valencia's header was nicely saved by a diving Ueltschey.
In overtime, the Battery came closest to winning the game in the 108th minute. The ball was swept into the box. Midfielder Justin Evans ran onto the ball but his header flashed wide of the target.
