June 20, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) Following two more disappointing road losses, Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team will look to get its season turned around with a pair of home games this week at Uihlein Soccer Park. Wave United (1-2-1 home / 0-5-0 road / 1-7-1 overall (4 points)) will host the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, June 23, 7:35 PM before entertaining the arch-rival Minnesota Thunder on Friday, June 25, 7:35 PM. Milwaukee closes out its busy week with a road game Saturday at Minnesota (June 26, 7:05 PM) in a re-match with the Thunder at Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, MN.
Coach Art Kramer's team was rebuffed in its effort to claim a road victory this past weekend when Wave United fell at Virginia Beach (5-2 on Friday, 6/18) and Richmond (2-0 on Saturday, 6/19). Milwaukee had its opportunities in both contests, squandering a 2-1 halftime advantage against the Mariners before yielding a pair of second half goals to the shorthanded Kickers the following night (See Last Week's Recap for more details.)
Another challenging week lies ahead for Wave United as it will face the two teams currently battling for the top spot in the A-League's Western Conference. The Timbers (7-3-0, 21 points) and Thunder (6-1-3, 21 points) are scheduled to meet Tuesday night (6/22) in St. Paul, MN.
Wednesday night's game against Portland is also "Carload Night" at Uihlein, with admission per vehicle (and all fans in it) just $25, excluding the $5 Uihlein Parking Fee. Individual general admission tickets are $12 (adult) and $8 (children under 12). Friday night's game against Minnesota will also be another "Fireworks Friday" at Uihlein, with post-game fireworks following the match. Call the Wave / Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for more information, or visit www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.

Wave United Notes:
*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283).
*Wave United's 2-1 loss to Seattle on 6/13 at Pat Jones Field was Milwaukee's first loss on the PJF in five career outings. Wave United was 3-0-0 last season before playing to a scoreless draw with Minnesota on 5/22. In each case, the games were shifted to the PJF due to wet or unplayable conditions on the Stadium Field at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*Wave United has trailed just once at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13) so far this season. However, Milwaukee has been outscored 15-2 after halftime and has blown three-of-its four halftime advantages.
*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/6 v. Syracuse was the 25th of his seven-year A-League career (91 games) and the 9th of his two-year Wave United career (25 games).
*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.
*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup
*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.
*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF Qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 â Dec. 5, 2004.
Last Week's Recap:
6/18 @ Virginia Beach Mariners 5, Wave United 2 Attendance â 1,184
Forward Carlos Garcia scored both the tying and go-ahead goals for Virginia Beach in a 16-minute span of the second half (51st and 67th minutes) to spark the Mariners to a 5-2 win over Wave United Friday night (6/18) at the Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, VA. A crowd of 1,184 endured stormy conditions to witness the match, which was delayed 90 minutes from its original starting time due to the weather.
Milwaukee had taken a 2-1 halftime lead on goals by Johnny Torres and Todd Dusosky on either side of a strike by Virginia Beach's Dante Washington. Washington added another tally in the 78th minute to give the Mariners a 4-2 lead before Tony McManus capped off the scoring in the final minute. Mariners' goalkeeper Matt Nelson recorded the win with three saves, while Milwaukee goalkeeper Jim Larkin registered five in the loss.

McColm Cephas' shorthand goal in the 80th minute broke a scoreless tie and sparked the Richmond Kickers to a 2-0 win over Milwaukee Wave United Saturday night (6/19) in an A-League contest at the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, VA. The win improved Richmond's record to 7-3-3 (24 points) while dropping Wave United to 1-7-1 (4 points).
Similar to Friday night's match at Virginia Beach, the second half proved to be Wave United's undoing. Milwaukee had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 58th minute when Johnny Torres was tripped up in the penalty area by Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale, but Pascale stopped Greg Howes on the ensuing penalty kick to keep Milwaukee off the board.
The momentum still seemed to be in Milwaukee's favor when Kickers forward Mike Burke was issued a second yellow card (thus receiving a red card ejection) for a hard tackle on Chad Dombrowski in the 71st minute, but Wave United failed to produce any offense with the subsequent man advantage.
Meanwhile, Cephas scored in the 80th minute on a header from eight yards out as redirected a free kick from Paul Lekics past Milwaukee goalkeeper Jeff Richey, who was making his first start of the season. Joey Worthen added an insurance tally from Lekics in the 90th minute on a low, hard shot that beat Richey to the right post.
