CHARLESTON, SC-The Charleston Battery picked up three well-earned points Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium, topping Miami F.C. 3-0. Jordan Hughes and Aaron King scored for the Battery, along with Andre Toussaint, the Trinidad and Tobago international who made his debut with the Battery as a halftime substitute.

The win gives the Battery (7-8-5) 26 points on the season and moves them into a tie with Atlanta for eighth place in the league table.

The Battery wasted little time, jumping out in front of Miami (8-10-3, 27 points) when Jordan Hughes beat Miami goalkeeper Pat Hannigan in the third minute from just inside the penalty area after shaking two Miami defenders.

Byron Alvarez began the play by winning a ball on the right flank and holding off his defender while the Battery came forward in numbers. Alvarez found Hughes, who laid the ball of to Lazo Alavanja, who in turn fed Hughes just inside the penalty area.

The goal was Hughes' first of the season for the Battery.

The early goal set the tone for remainder of the half as the Battery continued to attack in numbers, forcing Miami out of the attacking style the club is known for.

Even with the continued offensive pressure, the Battery did not seriously threaten the Miami goal until just before the halftime whistle when Luke Vercollone narrowly missed doubling the score, heading a Alvarez corner kick over the crossbar by inches.

After a shaky first few minutes in his debut, Toussaint, who officially joined the team two days ago, found King to put the Battery up by two. Toussaint ran down a lose ball on the left flank and sent a low cross into the penalty area. King first timed the cross into the upper right-hand corner for his fourth on the season.

The Battery continued to pressure Miami after King's goal. Toussaint set up Gordon Chin, who just missed wide from 10 yards out in the 80th minute.

Five minutes later, a spectacular save by Hannigan denied Toussaint his first goal with the Battery after the T&T striker controlled a driven corner with his chest and drove the ball hard and low with his second touch to the far corner.

After several near misses, Toussaint finally got his name on the Battery score sheet slamming home a ball fed in by King from near the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock was credited with three saves on the night, earning his seventh clean sheet on the season.

The Battery travels to Atlanta Saturday August 4, before facing MLS Dallas F.C. in the quarterfinal fixture of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup August 7 at Blackbaud Stadium.
