Charleston Battery News Release

Portland, OR. The Charleston Battery defeated the Portland Timbers U23's by a score of one goal to nil on Tuesday evening at Jeld Wen Field. Rookie forward Austin Savage headed home the winner in the 60th minute to lift the Battery to victory. The win means that Charleston will move on to face Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes in a third round game to be played next Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium.

Charleston enjoyed the better of the first half and came close to scoring from a number of chances. Jose Cuevas was denied by the woodwork in the 17th minute with a curling right-footed shot from twenty yards.

Ten minutes later forward Dane Kelly came close after being played through by Nicki Paterson. Kelly accelerated to meet the pass but his shot was blocked away by Portland goalkeeper David Meves.

The breakthrough came on the hour mark after some good build-up play that saw Jarad van Schaik slip a pass out to Cuevas on the left side. Cuevas sent a cross into the back of the box and Savage got past his defender and cushioned the header home.

Portland exerted more pressure in the late stages as they looked for a way back into the game but the Battery defense held fast as Charleston closed out the game.

The Battery will return to USL PRO play this Saturday, May 25th as they host the Rochester Rhinos at Blackbaud Stadium.
