Eagles Fly West to Take On Phoenix FC and LA Blues

Charlotte, NC -- The Charlotte Eagles are flying west for two regular season USL PRO games. Thursday night will be the Eagles first look at the Phoenix FC Wolves at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. They will then head to Los Angeles and take on the LA Blues on Saturday night before returning home and preparing for the Chicago Fire in US Open Cup action on Wednesday, May 29th.

The first year Wolves of Phoenix FC are coming off a tough loss to the Dayton Dutch Lions on Saturday, May 11th which saw them lose 4-3 on the road. Phoenix's Thomas Ramos opened the scoring in the 6th minute. Dayton would then score 4 consecutive goals before the Wolves were able to pull to within one thanks to goals from Aaron King and Peabo Doue. The loss dropped Phoenix to 2-5-2 on the season with 8 points they sit in 9th place, one shy of the playoffs.

Phoenix is led by head coach David Robertson, the former Glasgow Rangers player helped the Scottish club to win nine championships in a row. Prior to becoming manager of Phoenix FC, Robertson also managed Leeds United of England and Montrose FC of Scotland.

Leading the team in scoring are former NC State Wolfpack forward Aaron King and Brazilian midfielder Diego Faria with 2 goals and 1 assist a piece. Brazilian midfielder Netinho also has 2 goals on the year. King, a 2005 2nd team All American at NC State, played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies before signing with the expansion Wolves this season.

Former Charlotte Eagles defender Devon Grousis was one of the first players Phoenix FC signed when they started building the team.

After the Eagles play Phoenix FC they will travel to Los Angeles and take on the LA Blues who are currently two spots ahead of the Eagles in the USL PRO standings with 14 points and a 4-5-2 record. The Blues are coming off of a 5-1 victory over the Ventura County Fusion (PDL) in the US Open Cup and will host Major League Soccer's Chivas USA on Tuesday, May 28th.

Los Angeles' last league game was a narrow 2-1 defeatagainst the Wilmington Hammerheads last Saturday, May 18th in Wilmington. The Hammerheads got off to a fast start scoring two goals in the first half, LA's Allan Russell scored the lone 2nd half goal but the Blues came up short of finding an equalizer.

The Blues have a wealth of scoring options as six players have registered double digit shot attempts, forward George David IV leads them in scoring with 3 goals and four other players are tied for second with 2 goals apiece.

Goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski leads the team with four shutouts in eight games so far. His 5 wins and 4 shutouts are both tied for 1st in their respective categories in USL PRO, so far in 2013. In week four of the USL PRO season Woszczynski was named Player of the Week for his shutout of league leading Orlando City.

The Eagles advanced to the third round of the US Open Cup with a 3-0 victory over Sounders FC U-23 on Tuesday night. The win means the club will host Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire on Wednesday, May 29th at Winthrop University at 7 pm.

The next home game will be a doubleheader featuring the Lady Eagles and the men's team on Saturday, June 1st at Queens Sports Complex. It is Princess and Mustache night at the stadium so come dressed as your favorite princess or sporting your most creative mustache. The fun starts at 5:30 when the Lady Eagles take on the Atlanta Silverbacks.
