Battalion acquires overage left winger

BRAMPTON, Ont. – The Battalion has acquired overage left winger Danny McDonald from the Kingston Frontenacs for a third-round pick in the 2005 Priority Selection, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Monday.

"Danny's an offensive player, and that's what we were looking for," said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach. An overage spot came open when centre Kamil Kreps signed with the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers last week.

"With Kamil gone, we needed a player who could come in with the potential to score a few goals," said Butler, who sent Kingston the third-round pick of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, obtained in an earlier trade.

McDonald, a 6'1", 185-pound product of New Liskeard, Ont., was originally chosen by the Plymouth Whalers in the seventh round, 145th overall, of the 2000 OHL Priority Selection.

He made his OHL debut in 2001-02, scoring four goals and adding one assist for five points in 34 games before moving to Kingston in a trade. He played a further 26 games for the Frontenacs in his rookie season, recording three goals and seven assists for 10 points.

McDonald, who turned 20 last Feb. 15, had 14 goals and 42 assists for 56 points in 68 games in 2002-03 and finished third in scoring on the Frontenacs last season with 28 goals and 33 assists for 61 points in 67 games.

McDonald, who is expected to be at practice Tuesday, joins centre Tyler Harrison and defenceman Stuart Simmons as the Battalion's three overage players.

The Battalion, which opens the regular season by hosting the Guelph Storm at 7:30 p.m. Friday, now has 25 players on the roster, comprising 15 forwards, eight defencemen and two goaltenders.
