Louisville Bats News Release

After struggling in a 5-3 loss in the opener, the Louisville Bats walked off to win the nightcap 4-3 and split a doubleheader with the Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday night.

The Mud Hens struck first off Bats starter Jose Acuna in the third inning of the opener on a sacrifice fly by Max Anderson. The game unraveled for Louisville in the fifth with Johnathan Harmon on the mound. The Mud Hens strung together four hits to score four runs and take a 5-0 lead.

Held to one hit through the first five innings, the Bats offense came to life in the sixth. Jay Allen II and Leo Balcazar kept the inning alive with back-to-back two-out singles. P.J. Higgins then came through with his first home run of the season, a 371-foot three-run shot to left to make it a 5-3 game.

The Bats would get no closer from there, as Luke Taggert wrapped up the win for the Mud Hens with a scoreless seventh.

The second game doubleheader began better than the first for the Bats. Edwin Arroyo opened the scoring in the first with his 14th home run of the season, a 394-foot blast to right-center. Two hitter later, Michael Chavis added to the Bats' lead with a two-run shot to left, his 21st home run of the season, making it 3-0 Bats.

The lead would only last until the third. Seby Zavala got the visitors on the board with a two-run homer off Jared Lyons and Jace Jung followed with a solo shot to right, tying the score at three.

Lyons lasted 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, two of which were homers, with one walk and two strikeouts. Anthony Misiewicz and Johnathan Lavallee kept the 3-3 tie to the seventh.

In the seventh, Hunter Parks worked around a walk and hit by pitch to keep the score tied. But Jack Little did the same in the bottom half to send the game to extra innings.

Connor Phillips induced a double play and Chavis made a great play at first base for the Bats to strand the automatic runner in the eighth. Two walks would load the bases with one out for the Bats in the bottom of the eighth. With a chance to win the game, Will Benson struck out for the second out. But Chavis patiently took a four-pitch walk-off walk, ending the game for a 4-3 Bats win.
