Bats Silenced In 7-1 Loss To Quebec

The Capitales scored 5 4 runs in the 1st and got great pitching from RH Keith Dunn (5-0) in cruising to a 7-1 victory at Dunn Field in Elmira Sunday aftenroon in front of 1134 fans.

Greg Keagle (3-4) took his 3rd consecutive loss as the Pioneers had their win streak snapped at 4 games. Elmira finished their 7-game homestand with an impressive 5-2 mark as Keagle took both losses on the stretch. Quebec (18-11) snapped their 3-game losing skid and salvaged the final game of the series thuys avoiding the sweep on the road.

Eric Kofler hit a 2-run single and Eddie Lantigua doubled to the wall in CF to highlight a 4-run opening frame for the Capitales. Robbie Kison singled in the 2nd and eventually scored on a Sac-Fly to RF by Rudy Gomez as Quebec increased their advantage to 5-0.

The Pioneers lone run came in the bottom of the 2nd as Osmani Garcia hit his 1st HR of the year, a solo shot high over the wall in LF. Dunn got focused after that not allowing another hit until the 8th innig when Bobby Hill would triple. Dunn finished the day working 8ip, 3h, 1er, 2bb, 8k. He retired 11 straight batters in one stretch from the 4th through the 8th.

Keagle got back into the groove after the rocky start spinning 5 innings of 3-hit shutout ball from the 3rd through 7th to conclude his day.

Quebec finished the day tagging a couple runs on reliever Jordan Griswold in the 9th including back-toback doubles by John Cotton and Albert Pujols.

The Pioneers have day off Monday before returning to action Tuesday with the beginning of a 6-game road-trip. Elmira will play 3 games at the Adiondack Lumberjacks followed by 3 more north of the border at Quebec. LH Jeff Andra (4-2, 1.09) will put his league leading ERA on the line in the opener.

Elmira's next home game is Tuesday, July 2 when the Pioneers host New Jersey in a potentially pivotal first-half South Division show-down. That July 2nd game is Toshiba Fireworks Nigh with a large crowd expected to attend.
