Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats rallied for a three-run seventh inning to beat the Richmond Braves 8-7 Saturday night in front of 9,946 people at Louisville Slugger Field.
Richmond got the scoring underway in the top of the first inning when shortstop Brent Lillibridge singled with one out. The next batter, left fielder Brandon Jones, hit a two-run opposite field home run into the left field seats. It was Jones's first home run of the year.
The Bats quickly answered in the bottom of the first when the first four batters reached with base hits. The key hit was a three-run home run by Jay Bruce that scored Andy Green and Adam Rosales. For Bruce it was his team-leading sixth round tripper of the year.
The Bats played add-on in the bottom of the third when Jolbert Cabrera hit a two-run triple that scored Rosales and Bats first baseman Andy Phillips. For the Bats it was their league leading 20th triple of the season.
In the top of the fifth, things went south for Bats starter Homer Bailey. Braves centerfielder Josh Anderson led off the inning with a single to center and then stole second. After an infield single by Lillibridge, Jones laced an RBI single to left field scoring Anderson. A Bailey wild pitch put runners at second and third and Braves first baseman Barbaro Canizares then grounded out to third scoring Lillibridge. After an RBI single from Scott Thorman, right fielder Joe Borchard tripled to right scoring two more runs and ending the night for Bailey. Reliever Danny Herrera came on to retire the next two batters and ended the Braves rally. Bailey (4-3 3.55) finished the game pitching 4.1 innings, giving up a season high 11 hits and seven runs, six of which were earned. He walked two and struck out one.
The Bats answered the Braves attack with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Cabrera started the two-out rally by singling to left field and then stealing second. Ryan Hanigan followed with an RBI double cutting the deficit to 7-6. The Braves went to the bullpen calling on reliever Andrew Shibilo. The first batter Shibilo faced was Paul Janish who subsequently ripped a two-run home run to left putting the Bats ahead for good 8-7. Shibilo (1-1, 6.00) is credited with his first blown save of the season and his first loss.
The Bats gained some insurance in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a two-run double by Phillips. The double made the score 10-7 which was the final. Phillips finished the day with two hits, extending his team leading hitting streak to 13 games.
In relief, Bats pitcher Gary Majewski (1-1 5.00) picked up the win pitching two perfect innings and striking out two. In the ninth, Jon Adkins shut down the Braves to record his sixth save of the year.
The Bats and Braves will get together again tomorrow on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11 at 1:15. RHP Tom Shearn (5-1 4.34) will take the mound for the Bats while RHP Matt DeSalvo (1-3 3.57) gets the nod for the Braves.
