Collecting only six hits the Calgary Vipers (1-1-1) were defeated for the first time this spring 7-5 by the Edmonton Capitals in an eight inning game at Scottsdale Stadium, Arizona. Falling behind early the Snakes scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game but gave up another three runs in the next two innings to go down in defeat.
On the mound Calgary got productive outings from Scott Watson and Chris Bodishbaugh who both turned in scoreless innings.
Edmonton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Pete Tountas singled, Enrique Cruz doubled in a run, advanced to third base on a Willy Aybar groundout, and Cruz scored on a Tom Collaro sacrifice fly.
Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the third inning for a 2-1 score when with two outs Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and scored on a Jeff Giacomini RBI single.
The Capitals added to the lead in the fourth frame as Todd Linden walked, stole second base, Lou Santangelo singled in one, Brent Metheny singled, Matt Rogelstad singled, and Santangelo scored on a fielding error by right fielder Sean Boatright for a 4-1 game.
The Vipers tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Takaaki Suetsugu singled, Bryan Burke walked, Jimmy Rohan tripled in two runs with two outs, and Boatright knocked in one with a base hit.
Edmonton took back the lead at 5-4 in the seventh frame as Cody Nowlin doubled and Nick Valdez singled him home.
The Capitals added to the lead in the eighth inning when Aybar, Tom Collaro, and Linden all singled to load the bases, Valdez hit a sacrifice fly, and Metheny drove in one with a base hit for a 7-4 score.
Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Isidro Perez hit a solo home run for a 7-5 final.
The Vipers continue spring training against the extended spring training Cincinnati Reds team on Thursday May 19th at 11:30 AM MDT in Goodyear, Arizona, they play the Edmonton Capitals on Friday May 20th at 12:00 PM MDT, the extended spring training Seattle Mariners team on Saturday May 21st at 11:00 AM MDT in Peoria, Arizona, and again the Capitals on Sunday May 22nd at 12:00 PM MDT.
Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.
The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
