July 12, 2011 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Lynn, MA - Vermont scored three runs in eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie en rout to a 4-1 victory over the North Shore Navigators in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Tuesday night.

For Vermont it was their second straight win capping of a six game road trip where they went 3-3.

The game began as a pitchers duel as North Shore starter Crayton Bare retired the first ten batters he faced. The lefty would pitch five scoreless innings giving up just four hits whole striking out four in a no-decision.

Meanwhile, Ryan Fasano made his second impressive start in a row for the Mountaineers. Fasano (Stony Point, NY/Rutgers) pitched six innings giving up one unearned run on six hits while striking out five and walking just one. The lone run scored in the third when the Navigators had runners on first and third with one out. Connor Mach would then hit a soft ground ball to short that could have been a double play but second baseman Brett Johnson overthrew first base allowing the run to score safely. Mach would be thrown out two pitches later trying to steal second to end the inning.

Vermont would not be able to tie the score until the top of the sixth when Johnson (Little Elm, TX/TCU) singled with one out. He would proceed to steal second and advance to third on a throwing error from the catcher. Johnny Mishu would then single Johnson home to tie up the game.

In the eighth, Johnson would work a one out walk from reliever Nolan Corr before stealing second before Derek Jones doubled him home as the Mountaineers took their first lead of the night. Jones (Snohomish, WA/Washington State) would then score two batters later on an RBI single from Rob Kelly. Greg Bachman would then walk to load the bases with only one out before Jeff Cammans was hit by a pitch to plate the fourth Vermont run of the night.

The bullpen worked tremendously for Vermont as Fred Shepard and Spencer Jackson worked perfect seventh and eighth innings respectively to keep their team up three going into the ninth. Shepard (Amherst, MA/Amherst) and Jackson (Aurora, CO/Washington State) combine with Fasano's final three innings kept the Navigators hitless over the course of five stealth innings from the fourth threw the eighth.

In the ninth, Kyle Grana came on and gave up a lead off single to Eric Jagielo who took second on defensive indifference. Grana (Louisville, KY/Bellarmine) would get Dario Pizzano to fly out and Mach to strike out swinging giving North Shore one on with two outs. Then Eric Williams hit a soft line drive to right field for a base hit that skipped passed Jon Hotta allowing Jagielo to score. Hotta (Oceanside, CA/San Diego) was charged with an error as the run was unearned. Grana would then strike out Matt Boulter swinging to end the game.

Fred Shepard (2-0) pitched a perfect seventh inning striking out one to earn his second save of the year while Corr (1-1) was charged with the loss. Grana picked up his sixth save of the year putting him one behind New Bedford's Sam Dodge for the league lead.

The Mountaineers (13-11) are back in action to begin a brief three game home stand tomorrow July 13th as they host the Keene Swamp Bats at 6:30 p.m. The two teams will host a benefit for Buddy Lamothe at Montpelier Recreation Field by auctioning off merchandise. Lamothe player with Keene last year and was supposed to play for the Mountaineers this summer before a rafting accident led him paralyzed. You can hear coverage of the game on the air at ESPN 1240, WSKI and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.

Game Notes: Rob Kelly's single in the eighth has given him hits in six of his eight games in a Vermont uniform since arriving last week...Mishu's stolen base in the sixth has given him a league high 13 on the year, he is perfect in 13 attempts...Cammans has now been hit by a pitch seven times this year, second most in the NECBL.
