Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - Peoria was hoping to use home field to their advantage and even the series against their division rivals on Wednesday night. Instead, they ran into another South Bend offensive onslaught, taking an 11-1 loss on the chin in game two.
Peoria starting hurler Edgar Manzo was fantastic in his last outing as he carried a no-hitter into the seventh. However, his struggles against South Bend continued Wednesday.
The Cubs wasted no time getting the party started in the opening frame. South Bend sent ten men to the plate and scored six times. Pete Crow-Armstrong lifted a wall ball double and was immediately driven in by Fabian Pertuz to make it 1-0 Cubs. Two batters later, it was Owen Caissie who drove in the game's second run to make it 2-0 visitors. Luis Verdugo followed with an RBI knock of his own to make it 3-0, South Bend. Jonathan Sierra delivered the big blow in the first, a two-run double to give the Cubs a 5-0 bulge. An RBI groundout capped off the loud first inning that saw South Bend emerge with an early 6-0 cushion.
In the middle innings, South Bend tacked on three more tallies. In the third, an infield hit from Yeison Santana made it 7-0 Cubs. Then, in the fourth, two more runs came home on a Pablo Aliendo single to extend the lead to 9-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Peoria scraped across their lone run of the night, when Francisco Hernandez drew a bases loaded walk. The Cubs kept the wheels turning in the seventh by picking up a couple of additional insurance runs to stretch it to an 11-1 score that went final.
The defeat pushes the Chiefs to 33-50 overall, now a season-worst 17 games under the .500 mark. Game three of the series tomorrow is set for 6:35 with a great pitching matchup on the horizon. DJ Herz, who's been stifling against the Chiefs will make the start for South Bend, while Austin Love gets the nod for Peoria, riding his best stretch of baseball this season.
