July 13, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The TinCaps are heating up. Fort Wayne has won five of its last six games after an 8-7, walk-off victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland A's affiliate) on Wednesday afternoon at Parkview Field. The 'Caps have two walk-off wins over the past five days.
Catcher Anthony Vilar vaulted a fly ball to right field that landed over the head of Lugnuts right fielder Gabriel Maciel. That drove in pinch-runner Max Ferguson from second base to win the game.
The TinCaps (7-10, 34-49) rallied from a 7-4, sixth-inning deficit. Fort Wayne pounded out 12 hits in the game and walked eight times.
The comeback was ignited in the sixth inning with two outs when left fielder Corey Rosier launched a solo home run. Later in the frame, designated hitter Robert Hassell III, who singled, came around to score on an error to trim the deficit to 7-6. Rosier also tripled and walked on the day.
With two outs in the eighth, center fielder Matthew Acosta plated Hassell, who was on after a walk, to tie the game. He had a team-high three hits.
Ferguson was running for right fielder Agustín Ruiz, who led the home ninth off with a walk. First baseman Jack Stronach walked as well to move Ferguson into scoring position.
The 'Caps went 6-for-15 with runners at second and/or third.
Fort Wayne trailed 2-0 after the top of the second, but briefly took the lead with three runs in the bottom half. Stronach had an RBI single followed by a two-run single from second baseman Olivier Basabe.
Lansing (7-10, 32-51) went back ahead with three runs in the road third. The next half inning, shortstop Jarryd Dale produced an RBI single. But built the lead up to 7-4 with one in the fourth and another in the sixth.
TinCaps starter Efraín Contreras left the game after two innings due to injury. Dwayne Matos covered the next four frames with five strikeouts. Jose Espada pitched two scoreless innings, while Seth Mayberry fired a perfect ninth.
