LOUISVILLE, KY-Louisville (18-18) came back from four runs down to tie the game, but were unable to pull out the win as Syracuse (15-20) defeated the Bats 7-6 in extra innings Sunday afternoon. A Mother's Day crowd of 7,465 saw the two teams combine for 29 hits during the 12-inning game.
Bats' first baseman Earl Snyder singled in the ninth, scoring Edwin Encarnacion, to tie the game and send it to extras. Snyder went 2-for-5 with a double and a walk. Center fielder Chris Dickerson pulled the Bats to within one with a two-run home run in the eighth, his first at the Triple-A level, part of a 2-for-5 day.
Syracuse catcher Erik Kratz hit the game-winning home run in the top of the twelfth, one of his three hits. Center fielder Jeff Duncan went 4-for-7 with four singles for the Chiefs.
RHP Steve Kelly got the start today for the Bats in place of LHP Bobby Livingston, who was called up by Cincinnati to pitch at Los Angeles Sunday evening. Kelly gave up five runs, two earned, in 4.0 innings to go along with eight Syracuse hits.
Jason Kershner (2-3, 3.27) picked up the loss for the Bats. Kershner came on in the twelfth and gave up the game winning home run to Kratz, the first batter he faced.
Syracuse reliever Blaine Neel (3-3, 4.82) earned the win, holding the Bats scoreless in 2.0 innings. RHP Andrew Good made his first AAA start of the season, pitching only 2.1 innings in which he surrendered three hits and one earned run while striking out two.
Monday's game marks the finale of the Bats' four-game series with Syracuse as well as the third and final Education Day of the 2007 season at Louisville Slugger Field. LHP Mike Gosling (0-2, 2.76) takes the mound for Louisville. Syracuse will look to RHP Josh Banks (4-0, 3.57) to earn a series split. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.
