Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - With the best home record in the Texas league at 21-14, the Springfield Cardinals were looking for a win in the final game of their four game series with the Arkansas Travelers to take the series.
The Travelers' offense jumped on pitcher Chuckie Fick early in the top of the 1st inning when an RBI single by Jeremy Moore scored Andrew Romine from 2nd base to create a swift 1-0 Travelers lead.
The Cardinals would answer in the 1st inning when Steven Hill hit an RBI double off pitcher Jeremy Thorne that brought Tony Cruz around to score and tie the game at 1-1. Tyler Henley would then deliver an RBI single to left field that scored Tony Cruz to give Springfield a 2-1 edge.
Pete Kozma led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a solo home run that over the left field fence and brought the score to 3-1. Tony Cruz then hit an RBI single to score Mike Folli from 2nd base and increase the Cardinals lead to 4-1.
Cardinals' starter Chuckie Fick cruised after the first inning allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out seven for the second straight start.
After going 0-for-2 in his first two at bats, Antone Dejesus made a contribution in the bottom of the 6th inning with an RBI triple that scored Jose Garcia and increased the Cardinals lead to 5-1.
The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the 7th inning when Tyler Henley slapped an RBI single to center field scoring Matt Carpenter and bringing the lead to 6-1. Robert Fish then was signaled to relieve Jeremy Thorne, but Fish would run into trouble after putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with a wild pitch. Aaron Luna kept the Cardinals offense going with a two-run double that scored Tyler Henley and Steven Hill making the lead 8-1.
The offensive explosion by the Cardinals ignited again in the bottom of the 8th inning when Tony Cruz and Matt Carpenter scored on a Tyler Henley two-run single that brought the score to 10-1.
Eduardo Sanchez would enter the game in the top of the 9th inning for the Cardinals but quickly allowed an RBI triple to Andrew Romine that brought the score to 10-2. Romine would then score on an RBI sac-fly by Ryan Mount making the score 10-3. The Travelers would not add any more runs to their total, but would allow the Cardinals' bats 13 hits and 10 runs to reach double-digit runs for the 10th time this season.
Springfield will begin a four game series at NW Arkansas Thursday night. In game one, Springfield will send All-Star right hander David Kopp (8-1) to the mound against All-Star left hander Edgar Osuna (6-2) for the Travelers.
