Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass (Saturday, June 29, 2013) A six-run seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Dirt Dawgs bats came out late to defeat the visiting Torrington Titans 11-5, on Emile Johnson Night at Doyle Field.
"It was a complete team effort out there tonight," said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations for the Dirt Dawgs. "We had the offense to come back after being down a couple early, and our bullpen was able to hold them."
It was the Titans (8-9) who struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the second. But the Dirt Dawgs wasted no time in tying the game, adding two of their own in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two RBI double from Austin Sistrunk (Lipscomb). Sistrunk had a huge day, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Wachusett (4-11) trailed once again as Torrington scored three runs in the third, taking a 5-2 lead. The Dirt Dawgs battled back though, scoring three runs in the fifth to tie it at five. Jamill Moquete (UMass Boston) hit a two-run double to center and Josh Raymond (Judson University) had a sac fly to left to tie the game.
Wachusett finally took the lead in the seventh, scoring six runs to blow the game open 11-5. Raymond, Sistrunk, and Nate Pajka (Bates) all had RBIs in the inning, and Sistrunk also scored on a wild pitch.
Joey Gaouette (William & Mary) earned his first win on the evening, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out three. Dirt Dawgs' starter, Kyle Zaorski (IUP) lasted five innings, allowing five runs while striking out six.
For the Titans, it was Tom Quicker (SUNY Cortland) who took the loss, moving to 0-3.
Before the game, fans were treated to a ceremony honoring legendary Leominster High School baseball coach, Emile Johnson, who recently retired this past season after 43 years at the helm.
With the win, the Dirt Dawgs snap a five-game losing streak and will look to make it two in a row tomorrow, as the Pittsfield Suns visit Doyle Field. First pitch is slated for 4:35 PM.
