(Saginaw) -- A last minute goal spoiled Saginaw's first shot at an overtime game Saturday night, as the Barrie Colts defeated the Saginaw Spirit 2-1 in Saginaw. The two first place teams battled scoreless through 38 minutes of hockey, as goaltenders Francois Thuot and Dan LaCosta (CBJ '04) turned back more than a dozen shots each.

Saginaw struck first at 17:56 of the second period, when forward Ryan McDonough scored from the bottom of the circle from Patrick Asselin and Jamie Klie. The goal launched hundreds of Teddy Bears in the Spirit's fourth annual Teddy Bear Toss, courtesy Meijer stores. The bears will benefit Toys for Tots, and proceeds from the sale of the bears will benefit The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

The Spirit maintained their 1-0 lead into the 13th minute of the third period, when the Colts' captain, forward Bryan Little, scored on the powerplay. The Spirit took a man advantage into the final minute of the game, but the Colts broke out on Saginaw's powerplay and went ahead 2-1 on Matthew Bragg's shorthanded goal. Saginaw pulled goalie Thuot for the final :20 seconds of the game, but were unable to force overtime.

The loss takes Saginaw's record to 18-11-0-0 on the season, with 36 points. Saginaw remains in first place in the West division, with a game in hand on the Plymouth Whalers, though Plymouth's 6-3 win over Owen Sound also gives them 36 points.

The Spirit resume action Friday at 7:30 PM at Mississauga when they face the Ice Dogs for the first game of a three game road trip before the Christmas break. The Spirit return home to face the Erie Otters Wednesday, December 28th. Saginaw welcomes nine-time Stanley Cup Champion coach Scotty Bowman to the December 28th game, courtesy AAA, Merrill Tool and Machine and Tri-Star Trust Bank.
