Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
[WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.] â Trevor Jobe had a goal and two assists in his Polar Twins debut but it was not be enough as Winston-Salem lost a heartbreaker to the Jacksonville Barracudas 5-4 in overtime Friday night in Southern Professional Hockey League action.
Playing with a short roster, the Polar Twins came out strong in the first period. Brett Cross put the Twins up 1-0 with a power play tally only 1:17 into the game. Steve Lajoie found Cross wide open at the right post and made a soft cross-crease pass to give Cross his 12th goal of the season.
Jacksonville tied it up just over a minute later on Darren Partch's fifth goal of the season. Rick Nichol made the save on the initial shot but Patch poked the puck from under Nichol's glove for a 1-1 game.
Shaun Aebig's 16th goal of the season put the Polar Twins up 2-1. Jacksonville goaltender Randy Hevey thought he had stopped the puck but it trickled through his pads and over the goal line.
Then with only 34 seconds remaining on the first period and the Polar Twins on their second power play of the nigh, Twins Captain Rhett Dudley drilled a shot from the point through a screen to beat Hevey and give the Polar Twins their largest lead of the night at 3-1.
The Barracudas made it a one-goal game in the second period. Brent Rumble found himself alone in the slot and wristed a shot low to Nichol's stick side to make it 3-2 with Winston-Salem still on top.
The third period saw that lead slip away for good for the Twins. After Jobe made it 4-2 in favor of Winston-Salem, Jacksonville came back to score two more to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, the Barracudas wasted no time in finishing the comeback as Rumble scored his second goal of the game only 13 seconds in to give the âCudas the 5-4 victory.
Winston-Salem was 3-7 on the power play while they held Jacksonville at bay with the extra man, killing off both of the âCudas power plays. Nichol stopped 38 shots in goal for Winston-Salem despite giving up the five goals. Hevey made 22 saves on 26 shots for the win in net for Jacksonville.
Tomorrow the Polar Twins travel to Knoxville for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. Sunday the Twins return home to LJVM Annex for a special 6:00 p.m. start against the Asheville Aces.
