January 28, 2005 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release

[Asheville, N.C.] – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced this week the conclusion of the league's first annual winter meetings. The meetings were held in Hilton Head, South Carolina on January 24th and 25th. Several issues came to resolution including a format for the voting on and naming of league awards, championship trophies for regular season and playoffs, and scheduling for the upcoming seasons.

League awards will be given to the MVP, Rookie of the Year, Best Goalie, Best Defenseman, Best Forward, Top Scorer, Coach of the Year, and the player most involved in the community. Voting for the awards will be done by the coaches of each team as well as their respective beat writers and other selected sport writers.

At the end of the regular season the team with the most points, the team in first place, will be the winner of the Commissioner's Cup. The playoff champion will win the President's Cup.

Beginning next season there will be a 56 game schedule, as there was this season, to begin in mid-October. This season, games started on October 29th.

The completion of the sale of the Asheville Aces was also announced. The new ownership group includes Dr. Richard Hoodenpyle, Bill Stewart, Wendell Young, Charlie Davis, Steve Stark, and Aces Coach/General Manager Jeff Brubaker.

Another highlight of the meeting was the presentation of three expansion teams presented for approval to the board of governors. After analysis, the SPHL will determine what steps to take with the three potential expansion cities.

"Our first winter meeting concluded with an extremely positive outlook." League Commissioner Tom Coolen said, "This definitely bodes well for the future of the SPHL as steps were taken to insure the stability and growth of the league."
