Barons Wrap up Windy City Showcase

Cleveland Barons News Release


The Cleveland Barons have just returned from the Windy City Showcase in Orland Park, IL where they had one win and three losses.

Game 1 Thursday, January 15th Cleveland vs. Bozeman

The name of the game here was defense and goaltending as the Barons drop the opener 2-1 to the Bozeman ICEDOGS.

The Barons opened the scoring at the 16:09 mark of the first period as Tony Wiseman (White Lake, MI) scored a power play goal with the assists going to Mike Wolff ( Cicero, IL) and Matt Shouneyia to give the Barons a 1-0 lead. The ICEDOGS answered back with a power play goal of their own by Ryan Bunger at the 19:55 mark of the period to tie the score after the first period.

The second period featured numerous chances by the Barons but to no avail due to goaltending of ICEDOGS netminder Josh Kessel. The visitors had the only goal in the period, at the 6:35 mark when A.J. Balaze scored to make it 2-1 after two.

In the third , the Barons kept knocking on the door step of the ICEDOGS goal, but with no success as the final was 2-1 in favor of Bozeman. The Barons out shot Bozeman 46-23.Barons goaltender Ian Keserich (Parma, OH) was in goal for the loss.

Game 2 Friday, January 16th Cleveland vs. Springfield Spirit

The Barons came out flying from the start with many chances on Spirit goalie Kyle Diehl-Sutton. The only goal in the first was from the Spirit captain Jeff Jepson to give the visitors a 1-0 after one.

In the second, it was all Barons, as Mike Ruberto (Stoney Creek, ONT) scored at the 4:25 mark with the assists going to Matt Shouneyia and Vinny Jalaba (Beverley Hills, MI).Barons defenseman Bob Helminen (Calumet, MI) scored, at the 5:45 mark, on a turnover by the Spirit goalie to give the Barons their first lead at 2-1. At the 17:47 mark, Brian Bicek (Downers Grove, IL) closed out the scoring the period, with the assists going to Jason Weeks (Seattle, WA) and Tony Wiseman giving the Barons a 3-1 lead after two.

In the third period the Barons knew they would be in for a fight, as the Spirit forward Sean Erickson scored at the 2:01 mark to cut the lead to 3-2. Barons forward Jason Weeks answered back at the 3:05 mark with the assists going to Mike Ruberto and Brian Bicek to give the barons a 4-2 lead. At the 10:15 mark, Barons forward Mike Wolff scored with the assists going to Niles Moore (Columbus, OH) and John Goebel (Parma, OH) to give the Barons a 5-2 lead. The Spirit mounted a comeback as they scored 25 seconds later with a Sean Erickson goal and then at 19:55 mark with a Brad Howard goal to make the final score 5-4.

Cleveland goalie Ross Cherry (Basking Ridge, NJ) picked up his first win as a Barons as he had 29 saves in the win. The shots on goal in the game were 45-33 in favor of the Barons.

Game 3 Saturday,January 17th Cleveland vs. Fairbanks

The Barons came out of the gates as Niles Moore scored his first goal as a Baron at the 5:00 mark with the assists going to John Goebel and Nick Biondo (Parma, OH) to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Icedogs answered back with a goal 38 seconds later to end the period at 1-1.

The second period was pretty even until the Barons gave the Icedogs a 5 on 3 man advantage for over 1:30. Fairbanks took full use of the man advantage as they scored twice to give the Icedogs a 3-1 lead after two periods.

The Icedogs jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the third as Adam Gill scored at the 2:23 mark. The Barons started the comeback as Vinny Jalaba scored on the power play at the 4:13 mark with the assists going to Mike Wolff and Matt Shouneyia cutting the deficit to 4-2. Cleveland forward Mke Ruberto added another power play goal at the 16:35 mark to make the score 4-3. The assists went to Nick Biondo and Tony Wiseman. The Barons had many chance with the goalie pulled, but failed to get the puck past Icedogs goalie Brent Solei.

Barons goalie Ross Cherry took the loss as he 24 saves. The barons outshot the Icedogs 47-28 for the match.

Game 4 Sunday, January 18th Cleveland vs. Fargo-Moorhead

The early morning game brought together a match between the Barons and the Jets. Fargo jumped out early 38 seconds into the game with a Brandon Svenson goal to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Barons forward Mike Wolff went on a end to end rush and scored at the 4:38 mark to knot the score at one. The assist went to goaltender Ian Keserich.

The second period started out promising for the Barons as defenseman Bob Helminen scored on the power play at the 2:14 mark with the assists going to Mike Wolff and newcomer Carson Strang (Shaker Heights, OH). The 2-1 lead was the last that the Barons had as the Jets scored two goals at the 6:01 and 11:15 mark to give the visitors from fargo a 3-2 lead after two periods.

The third period were all Jets all the time, as they opened the scoring at the58 second mark to go up 4-2. Another Jet goal came at the 2:07 mark by Mark Agnew to put them up 5-2. The final Jets goal came at the 6:41 mark by Bob Preece to make the final 6-2.

Barons starting goalie Ian Keserich gave up 4 goals on31 shots and Ross Cherry gave up 2 goals on 3 shots in the Barons defeat.

BARONS NOTES: The Barons will play in Toledo this Saturday night against the Toledo IceDiggers at 7:30. This game is a replacement game for the folding of the Dayton Gems. On Sunday, the Barons return home to the IceLand USA arena to faceoff against the USA-17 squad, game time is 3:35.
