Another successful showcase tournament is in the books for the Lone Star Cavalry.
The Cavalry started the Chicago Windy City Showcase against the Fargo-Moorhead Jets on Thursday, January 15 and defeated the Jets by a score of 5-3. Cody Chupp led the way for the Cavalry with two goals on the night, including an empty-net goal to seal the victory. Cory Goglia and Jared Brown also finished with two points apiece. Brian Papcun earned the win in goal.
Friday's game saw the Cavalry up against the league's top team in the Soo Kewadin Indians. After spotting the Indians a 4-0 lead early in the game, the Cavalry battled back to make the score 5-4 late in the third period. An intense finish provided the fans with possibly the best game of the tournament, as the Cavalry came close several times to knotting the score at five against the powerful Indians before Logan Bittle scored into an empty-net to secure the 6-4 Indians victory. Kirk Golden had a goal and two assists for the Cavalry, while Cody Chupp and Tim Hartung each finished with two points apiece.
Coming off an inspired performance against the Indians, the Cavalry came out flat against the Minnesota Blizzard and lost in a shootout 6-5 during Saturday action. Nick Miller and Cory Goglia each had a goal and an assist for the Cavalry.
The Cavalry bounced back on Sunday morning with a convincing 3-0 shutout of the West Division leaders Billings Bulls. The Cavalry dominated this game from start to finish, led by the stellar goaltending of Brian Papcun who earned the shutout. Tim Hartung and Kirk Golden each had three points on the game, while Cody Chupp chipped in a goal and an assist.
Next home action for the Cavalry is this Saturday night when they host the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in a 7:30 PM start at Blue Line Ice Complex in a battle for second-place in the South Division. Marc Foster will provide the play-by-play via SportsJuice.com.
