
Barons Sign Jonathan Cheechoo to PTO

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City Barons signed forward Jonathan Cheechoo to a PTO, General Manager Bill Scott announced today.
Cheechoo, a 6-0, 200-pounder from Moose Factory, Ontario skated last season with the Peoria Rivermen where led the team with 25 goals and scored 56 points. Originally a 2nd round draft choice (29th overall) of the San Jose Sharks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Cheechoo is a veteran of over 500 games in the NHL.
His breakout season came during the 05-06 campaign when he recorded a team-leading 93 points for the Sharks. That included 56 goals which earned him the Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophy as the league's top goal scorer. He played in the 2007 NHL All Star Game.
In all, he has appeared in 808 games as a professional, scoring 546 points (282-264-546). Of those 800-plus games, he's played 287 at the AHL level with the Kentucky, Cleveland, Binghamton and Peoria, scoring 236 points (107-29-236). Cheechoo was named to the AHL All Rookie Team during the 2000-01 season as a member of the Kentucky Thoroughblades and earned a nod to the Eastern Conference All Star squad during the 2010-11 season.
Prior to turning pro, he played three seasons with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League. In 193 games, he produced 249 points (111-138-249). His best season was the 1999-00 season when he amassed a team-leading 45 goals and 91 points. His 45 goals were good for fourth in the OHL.
The Barons skate in three road games next week, beginning in Grand Rapids on Wednesday, January 23 at 6 p.m. Friday, Oklahoma City makes its final appearance in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. The weekend concludes with the team's first game against the Rockford IceHogs at 7 p.m. All three games can be heard on the Barons flagship station, 96.1 KXY.
