Barons Rout Smokies for First Win of Series, 14-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Tennessee Smokies (42-37, 5-5) fell to the Birmingham Barons (36-43, 5-5) 14-5 Friday night at Regions Field. The Smokies got out to an early lead, but the Barons stormed back in a major way to win for the first time this series.

The Smokies struck first in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly from Luis Vazquez and a Jake Slaughter RBI single. The Barons would take the lead on a three-run home run from the rehabbing major leaguer Yasmani Grandal, the beginning of 14 straight runs from the Barons. The Smokies score three in the ninth but it was not enough, as the Barons rolled to a nine-run victory.

Smokies RHP Ryan Jensen (L 0-3) had a solid outing despite taking the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, all coming on the Grandal homer.

The Smokies and the Barons will play game five of their six game series on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. ET when the Smokies send RHP Walker Powell (0-1, 4.50) to face Birmingham's RHP Sean Burke (1-3, 5.46), looking to clinch a series win. The Smokies will host the Biloxi Shuckers in its next homestand July 12-17 at Smokies Stadium. Thursday, July 14 is Throwback and Dollar-Hot-Dog Night.
