November 18, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH- Solid play from Garrett Stafford, and a slight edge in a battle of goaltenders, led the Cleveland Barons to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Aeros at National City Rink located in Gund Arena Thursday night. The Barons dominated the Aeros in their own end, out-shooting them 47-25. The victory gives the Barons a three-game win streak.
The Barons took the lead nearly halfway into the first. Defenseman Garrett Stafford wristed the puck through traffic and past Houston's goaltender Josh Harding. His third goal of the season gave the Barons a 1-0 lead at 8:44 of the first. Grant Stevenson and Nick Bootland earned the assists. Strong offense and solid play in their own zone, especially by goaltender Dimitri Patzold, allowed the Barons to hold onto the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first.
Two minutes into the second, Houston's Stephane Veilleux capitalized on a two-man advantage to tie the game at 1. The Barons did not relent, and an aggressive power play paid off at 8:40 of the second. Barons defenseman Jim Fahey scored his first goal of the season, firing the puck from the point past the Houston defensemen and behind Harding. The Barons held the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the second stanza, holding a 33-17 lead in shots on goal.
After strong play from both goaltenders prevented scoring for most of the final stanza, the Barons defense shut down an offensive flurry in front of Patzold. With less than a minute remaining, Patrick Rissmiller sailed the puck across the ice into an empty net, sealing the Barons' 3-1 victory.
The Barons have scored the first goal in seven of their 15 games this season. They are now 4-1-1-1 when scoring the first goal. The Barons also set a season record for most shots in a game, with 47 shots, 10 more than the Nov. 11 record of 37 shots.
The Barons continue their home schedule on Friday, November 19 as they face Grand Rapids Griffins at National City Rink located in Gund Arena. All Club-Level tickets are "buy-one get-one FREE" with the use of your National City Bank Card. For more information, fans can call the Barons at 216-420-0000.
