Barons grab three points over rival Phantoms

The Cleveland Barons traveled to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday to face their in-state rival the Youngstown Phantoms at Value City Arena, on the campus of Ohio State University.

The Barons jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first period as John Goebel (Parma, Ohio) scored his fifth goal of the year, a shorthanded tally, with the assist going to Nick Biondo (Parma, Ohio), and by Jacob Cepis (Parma, Ohio), his eighth goal of the season, with the assists going to Goebel and J.C. Velasquez (Clarkston, Michigan).

The second period featured two goals by each team. Pat Schafer (Hilliard, Ohio) scored both Barons goals in front of his hometown fans, his third and fourth of the year, with Nick Kosinski (Marquette, Michigan) picking up the lone assist on both. That gave the Barons a 4-3 lead after two periods.

In the third period, the Phantoms tied the scored at four to send the game into overtime, where Phantoms forward Rob Rassey ended the game for a 5-4 victory for Youngstown. Barons goalie Chris Carlson (Plainfield, Illinois), making his first start since coming back from an injury, had 36 saves in the game.

The return match was 24 hours later, at the IceLand USA Arena in Strongsville, Ohio. Playing in front of their home fan for the first time in over three weeks, the Barons would not disappoint as they came out flying in the first period scoring twice.

Michael Cox (Fraser, Michigan) scored his first goal as a Baron with the assist going to Michael Kennedy (Lyons, Illinois) and Velasquez. Goebel scored his second shorthanded goal of the weekend and sixth of the year, with Biondo picking up the lone assist giving the Barons a 2-0 lead after the first period.

After the intermission, the Barons picked up where they left off, scoring three more goals in the second period. Goebel scored his second of the night and 7th of the year with Biondo and Jake Coyle (Brooklyn, Ohio) picking up the assists. After a Youngstown goal by Anthony Ciraulo, Barons forward Pat Schafer scored on the power play, his fifth goal of the season, with Coyle picking up the assist. Biondo wrapped up the period's work with a power play goal, his eighth of the year, with Coyle and Schafer getting assists, giving the Barons a 5-1 lead after two.

The third period featured a goal by Cepis, his ninth of the year with Steve Leppo (McKeesport, PA) and Velasquez picking up the assists, wrapping up the Barons 6-1 victory.

Barons goalie Blake MacNicol ( Milan, Ohio) picked up his fifth win of the year (5-4-1) with a 31 saves performance.

NEW BARONS ARRIVE TO CLEVELAND: The Cleveland Barons made some moves over the past week to shore up the squad.

Arriving to the Barons are J.C. Velasquez, a forward from Clarkston, Michigan. Velasquez was the second leading scorer on the Central Texas Marshals team with nine points. He has had an immediate impact with a three-point weekend.

Michael Cox, a forward from Fraser, Michigan, comes in from the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). Defenseman Steve Leppo (McKeesport, Pennsylvania) joined the Barons from the division rival Toledo IceDiggers.

BARONS NOTES: The Barons continue their four game home stand with two games this weekend against their in-state rivals.

The Toledo IceDiggers will be the opponent on Friday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

The Youngstown Phantoms will return Saturday night at 7:05 p.m..
