Barons Drop Game One, 4-2

September 10, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons set a modern-franchise record with 92 wins in 2009 and scored the most runs in the entire Southern League during the regular season, but none of that could help cure the franchise's recent playoff struggles. The Barons dropped their eighth straight playoff game, losing to the Jacksonville Suns in Game 1 Thursday night, 4-2.

John Ely (0-1, 4.50) looked dominant through the first four innings as he held the Suns to just one hit. But the Southern League's Right-Handed Pitcher of the Year ran into trouble in the fifth inning when he issued a leadoff walk to Kevin Randel. Lorezo Scott followed with an RBI triple that tied the game at 1-1 before Matt Dominguez put the Suns ahead for good with an RBI single. The Suns added a third run with an RBI double off the bat of Bryan Petersen.

Ely's night ended after six innings. He allowed just the three runs on six hits. He struck out six batters and walked two.

The Barons lineup had trouble getting on track most of the night, especially at the top of the order. The top six hitters in the Barons lineup were a combined 1-for-23 on the night, recording their only hit on a C.J. Retherford RBI single in the eighth inning.

The Barons took an early lead in the contest. Lee Cruz led off the third inning with a triple and came around to score on Jared Price's RBI double. Price moved to third on a Robbie Hudson sacrifice bunt, but Jordan Danks and Retherford couldn't bring him home as the Barons run-scoring woes in the postseason continued. The Barons have now scored two-or-fewer runs in 13 of their last 17 playoff games.

The Barons and Suns will continue their best-of-five first-round playoff series with a 7:05 PM contest on Friday. RH Matt Zaleski will try to even the series opposite LH Graham Taylor. Post-game fireworks will follow the game.
