Barons Back With WKNR, Deal Extends To Local High Schools
September 21, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND â The Cleveland Barons, in conjunction with SportsTalk 850-WKNR, today announced the radio and Internet broadcast schedule for the 2004-05 season. Michael T. Lehr, President of the Cleveland Barons, and Michael Luczak, Program Director of WKNR, made the announcement.
SportsTalk 850-WKNR will broadcast all 40 of the Barons road contests this season. The broadcast schedule begins with the Barons regular season opening match up at Grand Rapids on Friday, October 15th at 7:30pm.
In addition to the coverage of road games, SportsTalk 850-WKNR's web site will broadcast all 80 regular season games live through their Internet home at www.sportstalkcleveland.com.
SportsTalk 850-WKNR will also broadcast all of the Barons 2005 Calder Cup Playoff games.
"Adding Cleveland Barons hockey to the SportsTalk 850-WKNR broadcasts is a coup," stated Luczak. "When the Barons hit the road, their fans won't miss a minute of the action."
Jamie Smock will return for his fourth season as the "Voice of the Barons". Smock has called all the Barons play-by-play action since their return to Cleveland in 2001.
In addition to the game coverage, SportsTalk 850-WKNR will air a weekly call-in program, "The Cleveland Hockey Insider Show", beginning in January. WKNR's support of Cleveland hockey will extend to the high school ranks, as they present "Cold War II" on January 29th. That Saturday afternoon, prior to the Barons home game against the St. John's Maple Leafs, St. Edward and St. Ignatius will go head-to-head for the second consecutive season at Gund Arena. Last year St. Edward won the inaugural "Cold War" game between the two bitter rivals, 3-2.
"As the only all-sports station in Northeast Ohio, the Barons felt it was important to return to SportsTalk 850-WKNR as our flagship station and to www.SportsTalkCleveland.com for our World Wide Web location," said Lehr. "This is a true partnership between two very committed companies to the Cleveland area."
The Barons are set to open the 2004-05 home schedule on Saturday, October 16th at Gund Arena at 7pm against the Manitoba Moose. Discounted group tickets are available by calling the Barons Front Office at 216.420.0000. For all ticket information, Crash The Net at www.clevelandbarons.net.
