Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (17-11, 43-55) were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers (18-10, 46-52) 10-7 in a slugfest at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday night as the visitors gained a split of the four-game series between second half division leaders. The 'Fish had 11 hits on the evening, marking the 36th time this season that they have collected ten or more hits in a single game.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Matt Iannazzo (4-7) suffered the loss, lasting just three and one-third innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned runs) on nine hits, walking one, striking out three, and surrendering one home run. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Joe Gardner (6-3) picked up the victory, tossing five innings, giving up seven runs (six earned runs) on nine hits, walking one, striking out seven, allowing one home run, and hitting two batters. Marcus Walden pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the 2105 campaign.
Bridgeport took the early 2-0 lead off Gardner in the bottom half of the first inning with two out and nobody on. Welington Dotel was hit by a pitch, and scored the game's first run on an RBI double by Wilson Batista. Sean Burroughs brought Batista home later in the frame with a run-scoring single. Lancaster would answer right back in the top of the second inning to tie the game up on a two-run home run by Brian Cavazos-Galvez off Iannazzo. The 'Fish would take their second lead of the night in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on four hits. Dotel brought in Matt Wessinger and Matt Burns with a single, and Andres Rodriguez capped the rally with a three-run home run to left off Gardner, and Bridgeport appeared to be comfortably ahead 7-2.
Lancaster would chip away at the deficit with three more runs in the third on four hits off Iannazzo to get right back in the game, now trailing by just two runs at 7-5. The Barnstormers took their first lead of the night in the fourth with four runs on four hits. The big blow was a two-out, go-ahead three run home run by Cavazos-Galvez off Bridgeport reliever Sam Gervacio, the second roundtripper of the night for the All-Star slugger, and just like that Lancaster scored seven unanswered runs and had a 9-7 advantage. Cavazos-Galvez finished the night with four hits, four runs scored and six driven home, including three extra base hits (two home runs and a double). The outfielder now leads the Atlantic League in home runs with 15 and is tied for first amongst active players in runs batted in with 57. Bridgeport threatened in the ninth off Walden, putting two men on which brought Sean Burroughs to the plate representing the tying-run, but the comeback fell short as he grounded out to end the game, and Lancaster had an impressive come from behind victory on the road. Rodriguez led the way for Bridgeport with three hits, extending his hitting streak to six consecutive games.
