Barnstormers Blanked, Lose Hold On First
June 28, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers have lost their grip on first place in the Freedom Division, at least for one day.
Casey Coleman (3-0) no-hit the Barnstormers for the first five innings and combined with two relievers on a two-hit shutout as Sugar Land took the fourth game of a weeklong series from the Barnstormers, 3-0.
With a week left in the first half, the Skeeters (36-21) have forged ahead of Lancaster (35-21) in the division race.
Coleman dominated from the outset. The right-hander survived a throwing error by shortstop Alvaro Rondon in the third as Carlos Garcia was thrown out stealing on the next pitch. He did not allow a ball out of the infield until the second out in the fifth when K.C. Hobson flied to right and faced the minimum of 15 batters over the first five innings.
Grant Desme ripped a single into left center to open the sixth off the former Chicago Cub. He never got to move as Coleman retired the side afterward.
Rico Noel and Ryan Casteel drew walks in the seventh as Coleman began to fade. Kraig Sitton took over and froze the runners at the corners with a pop up out of Hobson and a Trayvon Robinson grounder to third.
Lancaster's second hit of the night was a two-out double by Blake Gailen that landed on the right field chalk line in the ninth. Felipe Paulino retired Casteel on a grounder to third to end the night. Paulino recorded his league leading 16th save.
Jonathan Albaladejo (5-3) gave Lancaster a strong effort. The right-hander allowed eight hits and three runs in seven innings. He walked none and struck out five.
Sugar Land pieced together its first run in the third inning. Colin Walsh led off with a double that skipped to the wall in left. Barrett Barnes smashed a ball toward the middle that deflected off Albaladejo too far away for Noel to recover it in time. Rondon grounded to second to drive home the run.
A bunt single by Rondon, line drive base hit by Anthony Giansanti and bouncing single through the left side by Matt Chavez produced a second run in the fifth inning. Courtney Hawkins opened the sixth with a home run to left center.
Nate Reed (6-1) will take the mound for the Barnstormers on Friday evening against lefty Ben Griset (2-2) on Friday. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 7:45 EDT.
NOTES: Sugar Land's starting pitchers have a 1.38 ERA for the series with three quality starts...Lancaster has been outhit, 50-24, in the four games...The two hits was a season low...Albaladejo's quality start was his club leading sixth.
