Barnes, Gove Honored by CHL
November 4, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Center Dave Gove of the Laredo Bucks and Austin Ice Bats netminder Matt Barnes have respectively been named the Central Hockey League's Player and Goaltender of the Week for Week 3 of the CHL season.
The 24-year old Gove hails from Centerville, Massachusetts, and enjoyed the finest individual offensive week in the CHL to date this season, scoring twice and adding 10 assists to pace the expansion Bucks to a 2-0-1 mark in three games. Gove first set up a game-tying goal with just 56 seconds left in the Bucks eventual 5-4 shootout loss in San Angelo October 29th, then paced Laredo to a win over Corpus Christi in the Bucks sold-out home opener at the Laredo Entertainment Center, scoring once and adding five assists in a 7-3 victory November 1st. The following night, Gove again stood out, enjoying a five-point (one goal, four assists) outing in a 7-6 win over visiting Wichita.
Barnes becomes the first repeat winner of a weekly award this season, having now claimed CHL Goaltender of the Week honors in both week one and week three. In a pair of contests this past week, Barnes once again was outstanding, allowing single goals against in wins over Corpus Christi (2-1) and Indianapolis (4-1) this weekend. In the two games combined, Barnes turned aside 59 shots, for a save percentage of 96.6. Barnes' heroics have played a large part in helping Austin maintain their perfect 7-0-0 start to the season.
