Banuelos Returns Strong, Yankees Win Fifth Straight

May 2, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Rochester, NY - ON a night when Yankees pitching prospect Manny Banuelos came off the disabled list and made his first start since April 12th, it was the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (14-10) bullpen and timely hitting that led the Yankees to their fifth consecutive win, setting a season high. Steve Pearce and Doug Bernier delivered run producing hits as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre downed the Rochester Red Wings (9-16) on Wednesday night by a 2-1 score.

The last time Banuelos pitched for the Yankees was April 12th at Buffalo, when the left hander walked a career high six batters and threw 74 total pitches in just 2.0 innings of work. He was placed on the 7-Day DL on the following day with a sore back and had been out of action until getting activated prior to the second game of the four game "home" series against Rochester. Banuelos looked as if the sore back that sidelined him was a thing of the past as he threw 60 pitches over 3.2 innings of work, allowing two hits, with no walks and five strikeouts and topping out the radar gun on several pitches at 94 miles per hour.

Pearce got SWB on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with a lead off homer to left off Red Wings starter Cole DeVries (LP, 0-2). It was Pearce's fourth homer of the season and third against Rochester as well as second of the series. The solo shot put the Yankees up 1-0.

Jason Bulger (WP, 1-0) came on in relief of Banuelos and kept the Red Wings off the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning. With two out, Ben Revere beat out a bunt single for an infield hit and came all the way around to score from first base on Brian Dozier's RBI double into the left field corner tying the game at 1-1.

It would stay 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth as the Yankees once again found a late game hero. With two out and Francisco Cervelli at first base, following a lead off single, Bernier faced off against reliever Deolis Guerra. Guerra had replaced DeVries following the lead off hit by Cervelli and a pop out by Brandon Laird. Guerra struck out Cole Garner for the second out of the inning before facing the Yankees number nine hitter. Bernier found the left field corner with a two base hit and Cervelli avoided a tag by Rochester catcher J.R. Towles and scored the go ahead and winning run.

Cody Eppley (SV, 2) who came on in the eighth reliving Bulger allowed a ninth inning infield single to Matt Carson but got pinch hitter Joe Thurston to bounce into a game ending double play for his second save of the season.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues its stretch of 18 consecutive games as the up the "home" team, with game three of a four game series with the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Dellin Betances (1-2, 7.25) gets the start for the Yankees while the Red Wings will send lefty Luke French (0-0, 0.00) to the mound for his first Triple-A start of the season.
