Bannister Mall Demolition Commences
January 21, 2009 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release
Kansas City, Mo. (January 21, 2009) - The developer of The Trails announced today that demolition has begun on the exterior of the former Bannister Mall. The demolition is the first physical step necessary to prepare the site, located at I-435 and Bannister Road in southeast Kansas City, for a proposed new mixed-use development anchored by an 18,500 seat professional soccer stadium to house the Wizards, Kansas City's Major League Soccer team
"We are delighted that this moment has arrived," said Robb Heineman, Chief Executive of OnGoal, LLC, the owner of the Kansas City Wizards. "A lot of hard work by a lot of people has made this possible. The City of Kansas City, State of Missouri, public representatives, adjacent neighborhoods, and all of Kansas City have shown tremendous support."
The Trails redevelopment will replace the Bannister Mall area with a 467-acre mixed-use project, ultimately comprising over 1.5 million square feet of office space and 1 million square feet of new retail space. In addition, the project will be home to a world-class soccer complex that will include the stadium and 12 soccer fields for hosting local, regional and national tournaments.
"Despite the challenging economic climate, we continue to make progress with this project and plan to announce a second major tenant soon," said Owen Buckley, President of LANE4 Property Group. "The proximity and access to the entire metropolitan area makes this location very attractive for many different reasons and types of uses."
