Washington, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced today that they have received infielder Ernie Banks in a trade with the Lake County Fielders of the North American League. In return, the Wild Things sent right-handed pitcher Steve Grife to Lake County.

Banks previously played for Washington for 54 games during the 2009 season. He hit .343 with 52 runs, 70 hits, nine doubles, two triples, 19 homeruns and 55 RBIs. The Wild Things traded him to the River City Rascals midway through the season, where he collected 13 runs, 32 hits, six doubles, five homeruns, 20 RBIs and a .376 batting average.

Last year, Banks started the season with the Southern Illinois Miners after being traded from the Rascals during the offseason. In 29 games, he hit .246 with 21 runs, 28 hits, seven doubles, four homeruns and 23 RBIs. He was then traded to the American Association, where he split the remainder of the season between Sioux City and Grand Prairie. Combined, he batted .346 with 14 runs, 45 hits, 11 doubles, three homeruns and 22 RBIs in 36 games for those two teams.

Darin Everson, field manager and director of baseball operations for the Wild Things, said, "Ernie brings us a big bat to put in the middle of our lineup with his return to the Wild Things. With my experience working with him in Marlins organization, I believe he will continue to be an impact bat for us in 2011."

The Wild Things will open their "9 + one" season presented by National Gold & Silver Refinery at CONSOL Energy Park on May 24 against the Traverse City Beach Bums. Season ticket, half-season and mini plan packages are on sale now, and deposits for group tickets are being accepted.
