LOWELL, MA.-Already in the middle of a long double header, the Chicago Bandits and New England Riptide went into extra innings in Monday's first game.
With the game tied 3-3 after the regulation seven innings, the Riptide's Carri Martin walked in the ninth inning and with two outs, Jess Merchant ripped a single to score Martin-the game winning run-and New England (16-19) defeated the Bandits 4-3 in nine innings at the Martin Softball Field in National Pro Fastpitch action.
Jessica Sallinger and Tracie Adix (2-3) held the Riptide to three hits. Chicago managed nine but New England got them when it counted.
The Bandits led 3-1 midway through the fifth inning when New England tied the game in its half of the fifth despite not getting a hit. Martin walked and Rachel Folden let a Sallinger pitch get away from her for an error with Jackie Pasquerella at bat. Martin reached third and Pasquerella was at second. After Sallinger struck out her second batter of the inning, she intentionally walked Lyndsey Angus to load the bases.
With two outs, a force at any base would end the inning, but the Bandits could not execute. Sallinger hit Lisa Modglin with pitch and Martin scored to close Chicago's lead to 3-2. Sallinger walked Gina Carbonatto and Pasquerella scored the tying run, 3-3. Adix came in to relive Sallinger and got a ground out to end the inning.
New England's Carbonatto led off the second inning with a triple and promptly reached home one batter later off a Lisa Iancin single and the Riptide took a 1-0 lead. Aileen Morales answered for the Bandits in the third; her first home run of the season tied the game at 1-1.
Chicago took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Laura Harms led off the inning with a single and Kristie Fox singled Harms home. Ashley Carlson came in to run for Fox and scored off a Nicole Trimboli two out single.
Erica Beach (1-5) pitched all nine innings for the Riptide and picked up her first win of the season, allowing four walks and striking out six.
Notes: Stacy May remained hot for the Bandits, in four at-bats, May had three hits and one walk...In 4.2 innings, Sallinger had six walks and six strike outs....Harms and Trimboli each had two hits.
