New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma -July 28th- The New England Riptide fell behind early to the Chicago Bandits 5-0 but came back with four runs in the fifth, capped by Jess Merchant's three run home run and then two more runs in the sixth to sweep the double header 6-5. Eileen Canney settled down to shut the Bandits down for the final four innings to increase her record to 10-7. Kristina Thorson, the Bandit starter, drops to 6-6.

Things started inauspiciously for the Riptide in the first as Kristie Fox and Jaime Clark hit solo home runs to give the Bandits a 2-0 lead. They increased to 5-0 in the third on two hits, a walk and an error. Nicole Trimboli did the damage with a two out double to score two runs. The Riptide had been threatening against Thorson all night and finally got through in the fifth. It started with Shanel Scott reaching on an error when third baseman Stacy May could not handle a ground ball. Carri Martin singled as did Jackie Pasquerella to drive in Scott. Merchant followed with her sixth home run of the year to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Riptide won it in the sixth, KJ Kelley leading off with a walk and Scott beating out an infield hit. Martin drew a walk, and a wild pitch followed by a Pasquerella single scored the decisive run, chasing Thorson in favor of Jessica Sallinger.

The Riptide head west for an eight game road trip before returning to Lowell to conclude their regular season with a series against the Washington Glory beginning on August 14.
