DENVER - The Buffalo Bandits were well-rested, having arrived in Denver on Friday. The Colorado Mammoth was worn down, playing its fourth game in nine days and second in 24 hours. The result was a Bandits win, 16-9, on 'Military Appreciation Night' on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center on Saturday.
"We were running on four hours sleep," said Colorado forward Sean Pollock. "We got into town at three o'clock (this afternoon). This league's tough. They didn't do us any favors this weekend, but you've got a game to play. You've got a job to do and we didn't do it."
Buffalo capitalized on Colorado's fatigue, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first 8:38. Entering the game, defenseman Steve Priolo had six goals in 54 career games. His first-quarter hat-trick made it 5-1 Bandits.
The Mammoth stormed back, as Pollock's goal 11:10 into the second cut the Bandits' lead to one, 7-6. But Buffalo responded. Dhane Smith scored 43 seconds before intermission, and added two more in the first four minutes of the third quarter. His 'natural hat-trick' in a span of 4:40 put the game out of reach.
"You can't spot any team in this league the number of goals we did in the beginning and expect to be on top in the end," said Athan Iannucci, who was signed by the Mammoth earlier this week. He finished with two goals and an assist.
Adam Jones led Colorado with three goals and two assists. John Grant Jr. had two goals and three helpers.
Colorado lost in overtime on Friday night in a game that started after 9pm MT. Saturday's loss dropped the Mammoth's record to 1-5. Buffalo improved to 3-1.
