ROSEMONT - The Chicago Bandits have reached a one-year extension with veteran catcher Kristyn Sandberg, team officials announced Friday afternoon.
Sandberg, who compiled 10 home runs and a team-high 31 RBI during an All-NPF campaign in 2018, is set to embark on her eighth season at the professional level. The Island Park, New York, native began her NPF career as a member of the USSSA Pride and has been the backstop with four separate franchises.
"We are excited to welcome Kristyn back for the 2019 season," Bandits general manager Toni Calmeyn said. "We know she can bring a lot to the table as both an offensive presence and veteran leader."
Sandberg initially joined the Bandits as a free agent Nov. 21, 2017, and appeared in 43 regular-season games. The University of Georgia product delivered a standout performance in 2018, including 37 hits and a .727 slugging percentage, both of which ranked among the top three on the club.
Sandberg is set to reach the 300 career games mark during the 2019 season. She currently owns 298 appearances with 43 home runs and 148 RBI.
In addition to her on-field accomplishments, Sandberg participated in a crossover promotion with goaltender Katie Fitzgerald of the National Women's Hockey League. Sandberg, a recreational hockey player, shot a handful of pucks against Fitzgerald before a game against the USSSA Pride in August in a collaborate effort to promote women's sports and raise awareness for the SheIs campaign.
The four-time Cowles Cup champion Chicago Bandits will be back at Parkway Bank Sports Complex for the 2019 season. For more information about the Chicago Bandits or to reserve your season tickets, please visit chicagobandits.com or call the box office at 877-722-6348.
