BUFFALO, N.Y. (October 12, 2006) -- Buffalo Bandits Director of Lacrosse Operations Dave Zygaj announced today the team has re-signed forward John Tavares, the National Lacrosse League's all-time leading scorer, to a one-year deal.

"John is one of the best players to ever play the game," Zygaj said. "We're excited to have him lead our team again this year."

Tavares helped lead the Bandits to an 11-5 record and an appearance in the NLL Championship game last season. His 85 points (32+53) on the season led the team and ranked sixth in the league.

Tavares broke Gary Gait's career scoring record on March 6, 2006 when he assisted on Mark Steenhuis' power play goal. The point gave him 1,092 for his career, and he finished the season with 1,136 career points on 549 goals and 587 assists. Having already broken the league records for points and assists, Tavares will enter the 2007 season 47 goals shy of Gait's mark of 596 career goals.

A native of Toronto, Ont., Tavares has spent his entire career in a Bandits uniform. He was traded to Buffalo by the Detroit Turbos prior to the 1992 season, and was a member of Buffalo's back-to-back MILL Championship teams (1992-1993). He scored a career-high 24 playoff points during the 1992 postseason.

The 13-year veteran was also a key member of the 1996 championship squad, scoring 81 points in the regular season and 11 more in the postseason. Tavares had his best season statistically in 2001, setting career-highs in goals (51), assists (64), and points (115).
